The hostess of the show is Heidi Klum, and who know more about the need for speed in fashion that a high end fashion model that had dominated the market.

The contestants are tested using themed programs, variable models, and random materials. They are also limited in time as to how much they can spend on creating an outfit made out of trash, or old scarfs. The most bizarre test was making WWE costumes for the female wrestlers. It was like Halloween on parade. The reason the the variable models is such a big deal, is because designers can get used to using the same one over and over again, and the show is designed to exhibit multi-talented display, and versatility to change. Different models could mean different sizes and shapes, that the designer must now account for. This also ensures that the designs will always be completely original, and not preplanned based on talent used for displaying the designs. The grand finale is that the final three contestants are given 12 weeks to come up with a line that is original and exclusive to them. If they succeed, then the prize money, magazine spread, and new designer line is theirs.
